Hinchinbrook Island Wilderness Lodge,
located on Australia's largest island
National Park, has by it's very nature
a strong commitment to the conservation of the natural environment
and ecologically sustainable development. The Lodge is the only
accommodation on this pristine wilderness island and provides
a unique base to experience the beauty, isolation, fauna and flora
of this World Heritage listed area.
Consequently,
it is with great pleasure and a sense of achievement that we
are happy to announce
that we have been awarded the Hotel Motel Accommodation Association
of Queensland's 2003
(HMAA) Award for Excellence for Conservation / Ecotourism Accommodation.
This
award is in recognition of the commitment by Hinchinbrook Island
Wilderness Lodge to sustainable tourism practices,
minimal impact, conservation, research, innovative interpretive
programs and adopting cutting edge technologies to reduce greenhouse
gasses.
Examples
of these endeavours include:
- Marine
and land based natural history interpretive programs
- Cultural
interpretive programs
- Support
for island based research programs
- Purpose
designed and built ferry suitable for the protected waters of
Hinchinbrook Island
with the design criteria including
wash minimization, small efficient engines to minimize fuel consumption
and greenhouse gas omissions, all round viewing and minimised
engine noise for operation in the waters surrounding the island and in
the Missionary Bay mangroves
- A
hybrid energy system combining photoelectric solar cells, a 240v
battery electrical storage
system and a high tech diesel
support generator.
- A
tertiary waste treatment system and using treated water for garden
irrigation.
- Waste
minimisation program including recycling of products and minimising
packaging
- Minimisation
of chemical usage and portion control products in both food preparation
and bathroom products.
- Energy
minimization by using passive "green" architectural
design encouraging natural air flows, a combination
of fluorescent and low wattage halogen lighting and minimised
site impact.
- Adoption
and promotion of the Hinchinbrook Vessel Transit Lanes
- Other
aspects include buying locally, recruiting locally and support
for local
community organizations.
